How to read Japanese set codes and card numbers

The quickest way to identify a Japanese card is its set code and number. Listings that show both are far easier to compare across shops.

Pokémon set codes

  • Prefix = era. SV is Scarlet & Violet, S is Sword & Shield, SM is Sun & Moon, XY and BW are older eras, L is the LEGEND era, and M is the MEGA era.
  • Number = order. SV8 is the eighth main Scarlet & Violet expansion.
  • Lower-case letter = special or high-class set. SV2a (151), SV8a (Terastal Festival ex) and S12a (VSTAR Universe) are sets released alongside the main expansions.
  • CP marks concept packs such as CP6, the 20th Anniversary set.

One Piece set codes

  • OP-xx — main booster sets, starting with OP-01 Romance Dawn.
  • EB-xx — extra boosters.
  • PRB-xx — premium boosters that collect popular cards with new finishes.
  • ST-xx — starter decks.

Card numbers

Pokémon cards show the number over the set total, such as 201/165; a number above the total is a secret rare. One Piece cards use the set code plus a number, such as OP01-120, and parallels share the number of the base card, so check the rarity and artwork.
